Dr. Martine Reid
"He had no one to teach him"

When he started in the fifties, he had no one to teach him. He had to discover the works of his ancestors, in actually very mediocre books that existed at that time, because there was not very much there, and also from museum collections, and his very first pieces were reproductions or copies of old pieces to which he would add his new skills, and his new technology, then. Which means that he was giving them a three-dimensional aspect which was lacking in the original so-called 'flat designs'.

Dr. Martine Reid, independent scholar, author and curator, interviewed at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, 2008.
