Miles Richardson
"He never ever gave up on being Canadian"

And you know when he started embracing his "Haida-ness," he had some problems with how that was being dealt with, with Canada. But you know there was a tension there, and I think it was a healthy tension. He never ever gave up on being Canadian, and you know the more that he embraced through... And then his initial window into being Haida was through the art, and then as he got more involved in the social aspect, and the broader cultural aspects of being Haida, and then into the political aspects, you know the day-to-day political aspects which is what him and I spent a lot of time talking about. I think the inconsistencies in how Canada didn't live up to what it said it was really bothered Bill and he took pretty decisive action to his part to correct those.

Miles Richardson, Past Chief of the Council of the Haida Nation, past BC Chief Treaty Commissioner, President and Chair of Haida Heritage Centre at Kaay Llnagaay, interviewed at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, 2008.
