"I don't think it is a matter of paper, who is Indian, who is not"

His mother unfortunately had been victim of the residential school, and did not raise her children in the Haida culture, and she also had married a white man. As a result, she had lost her Indian status, so she was victimized for several reasons and did not see any pride in raising her children as Haida. But he was Haida by birth. If we believe the Haida matrilineage system, I don't think it is a matter of paper, who is Indian, who is not.

Dr. Martine Reid, independent scholar, author and curator, interviewed at the Bill Reid Gallery of Northwest Coast Art, 2008.
